A lot of this book is my own life. I grew up in Vacaville, graduated from Academy of Art in San Francisco and am a CrossFit addict. I tell everyone I drank the “kool-aid” and love every second. Some things are exact details of actual events. I’ll leave that up to your imagination of what scenes were true. ;-)
Most importantly, I wanted to pay homage to all of the most important people in my life. Though their characters are not meant to actually be them or portray actual events in their lives, I used names that were near and dear to my heart. Sonia, Allison, Lacy, Megan, Nichole, Paul, Jason, Jen, Mason and Leighton are all people near and dear to both my husband and myself. Nichole was originally Amber, named after my own sister. When people read it they actually thought I was talking about her so we changed it to Nichole, which is her middle name.
Charlie was unique. I did not want to name him after anyone in particular but every time I pictured him, I pictured my own husband Chris, I would even explain clothes he wore. Though I was not going to use his name, I wanted it to be close to his name, something that started with Ch and could be shortened, i.e Christopher – Chris, Charles – Charlie. And Mr. Ashley is a personal joke between my husband and I so I had to name him that. So there you go, Mr. Ashley came to life.
The names used at the CrossFit box are the names of my actual coaches. Sadly I couldn’t use the names of every coach I have, but I still had to pay homage to the people who have changed my life through fitness. If you are looking for a new fitness routine I encourage you to check out your local CrossFit (search for the closest one next to you at www.map.crossfit.com). No matter what level you are, the right CrossFit box will work with you, giving you modifications, working with you to achieve your personal goals. It’s a kick-ass workout but so much fun! The best part… after having two kids I am now in the best shape of my life and I love the fact that my husband can’t get enough of grabbing my ass!
The only names that were completely made up were his clients, Andrea, Gina, Shannon, Jacquelyn and Ms. Devine. Because come on, I couldn’t name those characters after people I knew.
